The Mijas City Council will commence construction of the Costa del Sol Grand Park in early May. The project, awarded to Vías y Construcciones S.A and TT y EXC Arroyo for 22.6 million euros, is expected to be completed within 18 months, according to Mayor Josele González.

"We are facing the lung of the Costa del Sol, one of the most ambitious projects in our city, where an area of 360,000 square meters will
accommodate approximately 20,000 plants and around 2,000 trees and shrubs," stated the mayor.

González emphasized that the space will be "a green oasis with a navigable lake and other recreational, cultural, and sports areas such as a skate park, an auditorium, running zones, and much more. It will not only be a reference park for our city but for the entire province, ranking among the most important in Andalusia.¨

Meanwhile, José Carlos Martín, the Councilor for Infrastructure and Construction, praised the work done by municipal technicians on such a significant project, which required nearly seven years of effort and overcoming numerous setbacks.

"This is Mijas' most ambitious project to date, aligning with the sustainable development path we have been fostering in the city. Over the past eight years, we have established 11 parks. Spanning 36 hectares, this park will provide Mijas residents with nature, sports, culture, leisure, and tranquility, with spaces catering to all ages and preferences," highlighted Martín.

The Costa del Sol Grand Park, spanning approximately 360,000 square meters, will be located in the 'El Ahogadero' area. It will be the largest park in the province of Málaga, surpassing other notable parks in Andalusia such as the Parque María Luisa in Seville (34 hectares) and the Parque Moret in Huelva (72 hectares).

The design of the new Las Lagunas de Mijas park incorporates suggestions from residents via participatory email submissions, as well as ideas from drawing and writing competitions held in local schools (subject to technical feasibility).

The architectural style of the park will reflect typical Andalusian features, including references to the donkey taxi, Arab tiles, wrought iron, exposed stonework, geometric tiles, and other elements that define the local culture. These elements will be incorporated into fountains, kiosks, and notably, the construction of a small pavilion.

Extensive play areas, including some with water features, will be provided for children. Senior citizens will also have dedicated spaces with outdoor game tables (chess and cards), in addition to a traditional petanque area.

The project also includes an open-air amphitheater for concerts, theatrical performances, and other shows. The park will feature extensive gardens and forests, a perimeter running track, bicycle lanes, a skating park, and a climbing wall, among other facilities.

Located just one and a half kilometers away from the city center, this recreational area will be easily accessible on foot for residents. During geotechnical studies, significant historical and heritage archaeological remains were discovered, which have been preserved and integrated into the project to create an archaeological site.
